San Antonio's Hidden Gem
Real Puerto Rican Food, Made With Love
Slow-cooked mofongo, fresh-squeezed lemonade, and a lunch buffet locals swear by — just like Abuela used to make.
Our Story
A Taste of Viejo San Juan on Military Drive
El Coquí was born from a simple idea: bring the real flavors of Puerto Rico to San Antonio, without shortcuts. Every dish is built the way it's been made for generations — plantains fried to order, mofongo mashed and seasoned by hand, and a sofrito that does the quiet work of tying every plate together. As one guest put it, the food "tastes like real Puerto Rican food," and that's exactly the point.
Step inside and you'll notice the mural of Viejo San Juan on the wall — a small piece of the island brought to Military Drive. Our lunch buffet is a neighborhood favorite, served fresh and plated by our team rather than left to sit under a heat lamp, with pulled pork, chicken, yellow rice, black beans, plantains, and a soup that regulars come back for on its own. Guests have called it "a hidden gem" with "good clean flavor" and "zero complaints."
We're a small, family-run spot, and it shows in the service as much as the food — attentive, warm, and genuinely happy to see you. Whether you're stopping in for a quick cubano or settling in for the full mofongo experience, we're glad to have you at our table.

"The plantains were cooked great, not too oily! The 3-meat cubano was decent, pretty quiet during a weekday around lunch. They also have a lunch buffet."
Mathew
"Just really good food, period. Everything tasted like what it was — no overpowering seasonings or sauces — just good clean flavor. This is a hidden gem. Zero complaints. You will eat well here!"

"The yucca fries were delicious. The ropa vieja in my husband's mofongo was perfect. The atmosphere was very inviting. The street mural of the Viejo San Juan is absolutely gorgeous."
Lauren M.
"The best Puerto Rican food. The shrimp mofongo was amazing. We went there for my nephew's Air Force graduation and they even gave him a piece of cake to celebrate with him. Absolutely, the best service."
